Australia’s tax reform process commences

On 30 March 2015, the Australian Government released its Re:think tax discussion paper (DP) to start the national conversation on future directions for Australia’s tax system. Out of the many pressures that may cause the country to “re:think” tax reform, two stand out: the rapidly changing economy and demographic shift. The Government’s objective is to achieve a better tax system that delivers taxes that are lower, simpler and fairer. The DP covers both Commonwealth and State taxes and invites community consultation on 66 deliberately open questions covering a very broad spectrum.
